Deep Linking: Commandment 3

Commandment 3: Deep Linking

Deep Linking Improves SEO Ranking

The deeper your links go, the better.

There are two types of links you should avoid using in your content:
  • Homepage. Most sites have too many links to the homepage as it is. It is important to strengthen internal pages to increase the overall SEO of your site, rather than simply point more links at the homepage.
  • Contact us. This is a common mistake for many people. As part of their desire to create a “call to action” at the end of a post, they write a sentence sending the user to fill out the contact form on the Contact Us page.  Don’t link to the contact us page unless absolutely necessary.
In general, you want to avoid links to the top level pages, like the homepage, on a site — pages to which the main navigation menu already has links. Instead of a link to the sub-pages like the individual Service pages instead of the main Service page.
The best links — and the most natural links in a content marketing strategy — are deep within the structure of a site so aim low to the content in the sub-pages.

Deep Linking Definition:

The definition for deep linking as stated by Wikipedia reads: In the context of the World Wide Web, deep linking is the use of a hyperlink that links to a specific, generally searchable or indexed, piece of web content on a website (e.g., “http://example.com/path/page”), rather than the website’s home page (e.g., “http://example.com/”). The URL contains all the information needed to point to a particular item.
They continue by stating the technology behind the World Wide Web, the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), does not actually make any distinction between “deep” links and any other links—all links are functionally equal. This is intentional; one of the design purposes of the Web is to allow authors to link to any published document on another site. The possibility of so-called “deep” linking is therefore built into the Web technology of HTTP and URLs by default—while a site can attempt to restrict deep links, to do so requires extra effort. According to the World Wide Web Consortium Technical Architecture Group, “any attempt to forbid the practice of deep linking is based on a misunderstanding of the technology, and threatens to undermine the functioning of the Web as a whole”.
