Design Trends for 2017 – Give Us Peace!

Give Us Peace!

Because 2016 was such a tumultuous year, with a crazy election, wild weather, and a rollercoaster stock market, many in the design industry expect the trends to go towards a subdued palette for 2017. When times are rough, people seem to need calming colors and shapes in the design elements they see on TV, Internet, and other marketing materials. As noted in my Pantone 2017 Color of the Year post, the design team at Pantone have chosen green to replicate the calmness that comes from nature.

Remodeling Identity

Companies like Netflix, and Instagram have remodeled their logos, listening to the simplicity trends of 2016.

Stripping a simple logo down to the very basics, once the company has created a following, creates a stronger bond with the customer base.  It is like singers and actors who drop to a single name – Madonna, Biance, The Rock… Simplifying back to a single color, or even single line rendering of the logo has become popular.

Meteorologisk Institute’s logo set by Neue shows the basic elements in the graphic logos  – “smooth curves of the earth and the sharp peaks of the saw wave”.
