Website Color Schemes: What Colors Work Best for Your Business?

This week, 360 Web Designs will be giving tips on how to choose a color scheme for your website. First off, what is a color scheme? A color scheme is essentially an association of organized colors that will be aesthetically pleasing. Color schemes are important when designing your brand. Consider your website colors carefully when in development.

Color Psychology

The first thing you must consider when choosing a color scheme is the psychology of the color choice. Different colors can consciously and subconsciously affect people. Large businesses strategically consider what color or colors they use to represent their business. As a small business, you should do the same. Let’s briefly go over color personality.

  • Green – Green represents wealth, tranquility, earth, and health. It is also a popular color for both men and women.
  • Red – Red is a passionate color. It’s often used to trigger a strong emotional reaction. Restaurants use it to stimulate the appetite.
  • Yellow – Yellow grabs attention. Because of this, it can cause strain to the eyes and should be used sparingly.
  • Blue – Blue creates a sense of trust and security. It is the most popular color preferred by men and women.

Other Color Personalities

Other colors can be considered that will evoke different feelings. Pink works well to market to women and young girls, whereas purple works well for beauty products. Black is often used in luxury branding, while gray is often used in technology and industry. Think about some business logos and which color they use. The color of your logo should evoke the correct response for your business.

Color Schemes

Let’s briefly discuss different color schemes you can use for your website.

  • Mono color schemes only use one color, using different tones from the same hue.
  • Analogous color schemes use colors that are close to each other.
  • Complementary colors use opposite colors.
  • Triadic colors are three colors equally spaced away from each other.

Free Tools

Everybody likes free stuff. Adobe has a free color wheel you can use to explore different color schemes. While the Adobe color wheels incredibly useful, I also like to use coolors.co when you already have a logo design. Coolors allows you to upload an image and it will then create a color scheme based on the image. Use it to upload your logo and it will automatically come up with a color scheme! From there, you can tweak and edit your colors. Even better, you can export your palette as a URL, PDF, or even CSS file that programmers can use. All of the hex colors IDs show up too as you are tweaking, which is really cool.
