To develop, learn, and have meaningful relationships with other people, young learners need a core set of foundation skills on which to build. One of the first concerns expressed by parents of autistic children is that their child is not talking. As a pediatric speech-language pathologist, I am typically more concerned about supporting acquisition of key foundation skills that must develop before a child can learn to talk.

The Learning to Learn Program includes assessments and examples of goals and outcomes, along with specific intervention strategies for facilitating development of the following five foundation skills:

—     Nonverbal imitation

—     Joint attention and social referencing

—     Sensory processing and self-regulation

—     Play

—     Early language development

Five assessment protocols are included with the book. Additional protocols may be purchased separately.

Children with weak foundation skills are struggling learners who are often difficult to engage in traditional play-based therapies and early childhood activities. The Learning to Learn Program provides specific guidelines for supporting the acquisition of these critical foundation skills through meaningful, playful interactions between young children and their caregivers.

This relationship-based program is designed for early intervention providers working with families of autistic toddlers and those who are undiagnosed but have social learning differences. Providers serving the 3- to 5-year old population in the education or clinical setting may find this information beneficial as well.

Love it! This is the missing assessment tool from our clinic! It's changed the way we assess and treat our children on the spectrum and our gestalt language learners.

I had some issues with mail delivery on my end but James was very quick to reply to my questions and was very quick and helpful at sorting out the issues. I received the book and test forms quickly and I am really looking forward to start using the program. Thank you!

Beyond grateful for this resource!! As an SLP returning to the field after staying home with my young kids, absorbing this book’s knowledge has been empowering and confidence-building. The format is so beautifully organized, providing information that is clear and digestible, while still dense and detailed in content. THANK YOU, Cari! I often say that while reading and preparing from this book. Thank you for providing the tools and resources you do. You’ve empowered me to do the work with my clients and their families I didn’t know was possible.

This book is amazing. I was impressed by how the author theorizes the core foundational skills. It is really important for anyone who works in early intervention to know. the assessment is also super helpful and it shows how observable behaviors of those foundations can be assessed. It is useful for parents and professionals to understand the rationale and how to apply the intervention.

I am a well-seasoned SLP with lots of experience with the PreK-8th population. I have intensive training in play-based therapy but I do not have loads of experience with toddlers and especially autistic toddlers. After learning that my grandchild has autism, I knew I needed to educate myself quickly in order to help me help him and to be of some assistance to his parents. The step-by-step approach here is helpful and I have applied it to my floor-time with my grandson. I am still not the "expert" but I feel reassured that I am on the right track. Cari has a wealth of knowledge and experience! I wish she lived here in the Northeast!

I provide teletherapy to preschoolers and their families. Instead of having to buy one of the expensive programs frequently marketed to SLPs, purchasing this books is a game-changer in knowing how to target functional goals as well as better equipping me for the parent coaching focus of teletherapy services. Thank you for this resource!

Love this program! I have worked with many school age children on the autism spectrum, but recently began seeing toddlers in an EI program. This is exactly what I was looking for. I love the information it gives to the parents and helps them understand what and why we are working on certain skills, necessary to master before language emerges. Fits beautifully into the parent coaching model.

The bar for this book was set very high, because the book "The SLP's guide to treating Childhood Apraxia of Speech" is hands down the best (and most used) book in my library. "The Learning to Learn Program" does not disappoint. Buy this book. Actually, buy both books. This one has checklists, assessments, goal setting help, planning help, parent handouts...the list goes on. It is all SO helpful. It's broken down into 5 foundational skills, and walks you through each step with practical advice, examples and plans. I am not a new clinician, but I wish I'd had this 15 years ago. This book will help no matter where you are in your career.

This book is such a great resource to have, especially when it comes to the intervention for children with autism. In the naked eye, it sometimes does seem like all we do as a clinician is just play, but Carie lists down in her book the foundation skills that we target during our fun play time. Easy to read as well. This is a book I would totally recommend!

An invaluable resource - highly recommend! As an SLP working in EI, the program has really helped me to better understand those prerequisite skills that are so important for learning. I've also found that this program has improved my parent coaching skills by providing me with strategies and techniques to share with parents. I have referred to it pretty much every single day since it arrived!

I really like how this book is easy to follow and organized. It is packed full of information. Great for the new clinician or one who has been doing this for a while. I was aware of many of the ideas presented in this book, but it helped me to better explain the rationale to parents. Before I had pieces of a puzzle, but this book put all those pieces together to help me see the full picture. Helpful handouts and ideas for joint plans and activities were also beneficial. I would recommend this book many times over.

An absolute MUST HAVE for anyone working in Early Intervention and those working with this population in the clinic environment! Seriously, this book should be required reading for new EI SLP's and if I was managing such a program, I'd be giving it to each of my new hires. Not only does it give a clinician lots of ideas for direct therapy BUT it also provides lots of ideas for the families of the kids we treat! Ideas on how to set up and personalize home programs, writing goals, teaching parents about pre-language skills and communication development. This may become my new graduation gift to SLP's starting out in this wonderfully complex and rewarding area of our field. Thanks Cari for once again, providing your fellow SLP's with excellent tools and resources!

As a professor teaching graduate courses on child language, I am always on the lookout for well researched and designed programs/resources. The Learning to Learn Program fits both. The assessment and examples of goals and outcomes for the five foundational skills are a gold mine for any early interventionist or anyone working with older children who still may need to fine tune these important skills. I highly recommend this program! Thank you, Cari!
