CARI EBERT, M.S., CCC-SLP is a pediatric speech-language pathologist in private practice in the Kansas City, Missouri area. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa and her master’s degree from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa, Cari is a mid-westerner through and through. She is a therapist, consultant, and nationally recognized speaker who gets paid to do what she loves most…TALK! She has found her niche working with very young children and their families, empowering parents to support their own child’s learning and development by embedding strategies into naturally occurring routines and activities. Cari’s expertise is working with toddlers with suspected childhood apraxia of speech, and she has become a leading expert on aligning therapy services within the guidelines of the Early Intervention Program (Part C of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act). Cari has a son with autism and apraxia, allowing her to engage audiences both as a professional and as a parent of a child with special needs. Because of her unique perspective, she recognizes the need for therapy outcomes and goals to be meaningful and functional.
DAVE HAMMER, M.A., CCC-SLP is a pediatric speech-language pathologist, currently working for the Childhood Apraxia of Speech Association of North America (CASANA) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Pittsburgh. After volunteering in the waiting room of the Communication Disorders Department at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, Dave was hired and spent 35 years as a practicing therapist and administrator at Children’s. He joined the CASANA staff in 2014 and currently serves as the Vice President of Programs. For the past 20 plus years, Dave has given hundreds of presentations on childhood apraxia and other speech sound disorders and he maintains a national and international reputation as a specialist in childhood apraxia. Although most of Dave’s experience has been with toddlers, preschoolers, and early school-aged children, he has also evaluated and treated many middle school and high school students throughout his career. Dave has a strong background in child psychology and family dynamics, which has expanded his ability to look at the whole child and emphasize the importance of family involvement. Married to an early childhood educator and literacy specialist, Dave has gained an appreciation for involving teachers as part of the CAS team as well as a significant respect for the challenges faced by school-based therapists in treating children with CAS.
