Easter always falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon of spring, as decided at the Council of Nicaea in 325 A.D. In Italy Easter is first a religious celebration but it is also celebrated with traditional Easter foods. These can vary from region to region although some are mainstays and can be found all over Italy during Easter.

Easter is a celebration of rebirth and hope and, for Christians, a celebration of the resurrection. In Italy, the week before Easter is the most solemn of them all. It is a time of reflection and special church services beginning with the observance of the Last Supper on Holy Thursday and culminating in the glorious celebration on Easter Sunday. Italians consider Easter Sunday to be a more “relaxed” holiday than Christmas.
