Kensington - Outdoor knife - Manganas Steel : Manganas Steel

Kensington

Kensington

As a kid growing up in Detroit, Kensington State Park was like Disneyland for me. A state park, within reasonable driving distance, where I could camp, hike, fish, kayak, and hang out on the beach all in one day. For that reason, I had to name this knife, dedicated to the outdoors, The Kensington.

I never knew how significant my time at Kensington was to me until I grew up. My love for the outdoors, the forests, of wildlife, all stem from my time there. As such, I savor my time camping, hiking, or even spending time in the yard whenever possible; but I’ve never found the perfect knife for these situations – so I opted to design it.

One of the most critical things for me in an outdoor folding knife is reliability. There can be zero blade play, the lock-up must be bank vault tight and it should feel like a fixed blade in my hand. So with the Kensington, the lock-up is as close to ideal geometrically as possible and utilizes a large contact face on the steel lock-bar insert and a 4mm / 5/32in stop-pin; lock-up should be overly secure.

To further ensure a robust tool, bushings were used over bearings, a consideration for the environment of use. I do not want any debris causing any issues with the action and it is my firm belief that bushings have more surface area contact with the tang – creating a much more secure tool. Beyond the lock geometry and action, the blade was a major consideration – 3.45in of hollow-ground 3.5mm/0.137in thick steel. A blade capable of slicing through cordage and any task presented to it, however robust enough with a 17/1000ths-in behind the edge thickness so chopping through firewood should be a breeze.

The final consideration, but by no means unimportant, was ergonomics and comfort. To that end, the Kensington was designed with overlays, devised to create a hidden lock-bar. This approach combines the benefits of a full-frame lock knife, utilizing a steel lock-bar insert, with the comfort and symmetrical grip of a liner-lock design. No part of your grip will land on an uncomfortable surface, ensuring your comfort for prolonged use.

I truly envisioned The Kensington as the penultimate outdoor knife for me. A knife that honors and embodies the gratitude I feel for having Kensington available to me as a child. My connection to nature started there and will forever be a part of me, as I hope the Kensington will forever be by your side in the woods.
