Resolute - Heavy use knife - Manganas Steel : Manganas Steel

Resolute

Resolute

I often do not find many knives to work well with my hands and as such, I wanted to make something that fit me personally and my ideals. Firmly resolved, determined, certain, and focused. That is the character of the Resolute – a knife design I envisioned to be my personal heavy-use-grail.

Firstly, the Resolute was designed to be solid as a tank and filling of the hand. At 0.62in (at the overlays) and mostly 6AL4V Titanium, the Resolute’s handles are designed to be strong and comfortable. I prefer a thicker handle as it fills the hand better and ensures the blade will not rotate within your grip. The micarta inlays, rounded edges, and fully jimped thumb ramp (handle and blade) ensure your grip is strong and without hotspots. This was important to me.

Equally important, my heavy use knives must be able to penetrate and slice through any media; again tactical principles. For this, I combined a number of my favorite qualities into the blade. I first began with a drop-point, 0.157in / 4mm steel, and a high-hollow ground narrowing down to 17/1000ths-in behind the edge. This will provide enough behind the edge for harder use tasks such as hacking and chopping, however, the thin edge will allow the blade to slice like a razor.

Slicing is a personal bias I have for my blades; for many of the tasks I tackle at home or in the woods, a thinner but robust blade is needed. I also carry my knives for personal defense and I will always prefer a blade that ‘cuts.’

To deploy the blade, a pair of thumb studs were used for their reliability and consistency, however, in the Resolute they have a secondary purpose. On this particular design, they work in conjunction with the 3/16ths inch (5mm) stop-pin and act as secondary stops. Overbuilt is not just a buzzword here.

Rounding out the design is the flow-through construction and recommendation to use Skiff Made bearings. Skiff made bearings are one of the best, if not the top, makers of bearings for knives, and their design and construction is all about strength. Providing a 22% increase in blade support and designed to prevent binding – they allow you to easily clean, service, and rely on your knife in the field as you would a similar sized fixed blade.

All of these considerations culminate in what I consider the ultimate heavy use knife. A stout, robust, and by no means a lightweight worker with extensive considerations for comfort, usage, and reliability. Firmly resolved, overbuilt, and designed for heavy use… Resolute.
