Part of the reason I began designing knives, was I was bored with what I saw as overly used traditional proportions and odd-looking one-offs which I would never use. I wanted to make knives that took traditional aesthetics and inject them with modern energy, swagger, and purpose.
When I looked specifically at tactical knives, I saw the same old patterns being abused, and as a result, most tactical knives look the same. Drop point blade, neutral handle design, black coated everything; boring. With the Ruckus, I wanted to push the proportions, the look and feel towards something that felt a little bit more brash, rude, even a bit punk. I envisioned something a person with a mohawk would carry (a personal favorite hairstyle of mine). So from the outset, this tactical knife would be different.
Starting with the blade, I took the typical drop point with a thumb ramp and exaggerated the ramp. I extended it and integrated the top swedge all the way through it, giving it a distinct mohawk look, combined with exquisite ergonomics. The blade, in what is becoming my style, is 0.118in / 3mm and hollow ground down to a 17/1000ths-in behind the edge, making it a tremendous slicer and capable for any EDC task.
The lines of the mohawk flow through to the bolsters which hide the frame lock chassis; a design consideration for both clean aesthetics and superior ergonomics. From the bolsters, the lines flow over the swappable scales, evoking a traditional character but with some edge. All of this culminating in the rear backspacer; a chunky and bold statement to the character of the Ruckus while still providing grip where you need it.
With exceedingly clean lines, superior ergos, and an opportunity to create a number of variations; models ranging from budget to superiorly premium with just a material change, the Ruckus was meant to be a departure from traditional tactical knives while not disposing of it.
